This event is to benefit WORKSHOP GALLERY ARTISTS FOUNDATION, INC., a New York City/Brooklyn based non-profit foundation whose purpose is to promote and facilitate the process of keeping traditional art craft alive and vibrant in our world and to encourage the interpretation and expression of such through the individual artisan. It is also for the BOBEA ART CENTER IN KENYA whose mission is to nurture, empower and mentor young artists by providing a conducive environment for them to develop their skills through training and show case their works.
WORKSHOP GALLERY will utilize the funds to provide operational funds for artists and artisans and BOBEA ART CENTER IN KENYAwill use the funds to provide free art classes for children for a year. HANDS: ART CRAFT LIVE will be hosted by Niama Safia Sandy, a New York-based curator, cultural anthropologist, exhibitions manager and essayist. Sandy's work delves into the human story - through the lenses of culture, class, history, migration, music, and race. Her most recent curatorial oeuvre was Black Magic: AfroPasts/AfroFutures (2016), a group exhibition presented at RUSH Philanthropic Arts Foundation’s Corridor Gallery. Her upcoming curatorial projects include: Bias/Cut, a reimagining of the adornment, customs and visual histories of the African Diaspora opening in May 2017 at okayspace in Brooklyn, NY; another installment of Black Magic slated to open in August 2017 at Honfleur Gallery in Washington, D.C., and more.
The Amref Health Africa ArtBall is a premier contemporary African art auction and philanthropic event in New York City. Legendary artist El Anatsui will be honored this year with the Rees Visionary Award. The event will consist of a silent auction which will launch online on ArtSpace two weeks prior to the event, a special live auction, an award ceremony, entertainment, and food and open bar.
